PHILADELPHIA -- Alex Rodriguez, the fourth batter of the game, was hit in the back with a pitch from Joe Blanton on Sunday night.It marked the third time he had been hit by Phillies pitchers in the World Series, and he stood at home plate for a long time, seeming to think the plunking was not coincidental.
Rodriguez talked to plate umpire Mike Everitt before going to first base. The umpires huddled, then issued a warning to both benches about pitchers throwing inside. This brought Joe Girardi out of the Yankees' dugout, as it could impact CC Sabathia's ability to move batters off the plate.
Rodriguez was the fourth hit batter of the series for New York; the Yankees pitchers had not hit any Philadelphia batters.
Game 4 started with a game-time temperature of 49 degrees. The Yankees lead the series two games to one and jumped to a quick 2-0 lead, scoring first-inning runs thanks mostly to a leadoff single by Derek Jeter and a double by Johnny Damon. The runs scored on Mark Teixeira's groundout and Jorge Posada's sacrifice fly.
The Phillies answered back against Sabathia in the bottom of the first. Shane Victorino's bloop double to left was followed by a ringing double high off the right-field wall by Chase Utley. Sabathia, despite a hurried mound visit from Girardi at one point, would have to throw 24 pitches before escaping the inning with a 2-1 lead.
