Bears GM Jerry Angelo and head coach Lovie Smith introduce new quarterback Jay Cutler. (Phil Velasquez / Tribune)
From WSCR-AM 670: Someone in the Bears' organization at a level above general manager Jerry Angelo has begun surveying options for changing the coach or general manager, or both, according to Hub Arkush, a football expert on WSCR-AM 670 and publisher of Pro Football Weekly.
"Inquiries have been made, feelers have been put out," Arkush said on the radio station today regarding the initial step of gauging interest and affordability of some of the big-names candidates available.
Arkush specifically named former Broncos coach Mike Shanahan, who groomed Bears quarterback Jay Cutler and helped him earn a Pro Bowl berth in Denver; former Steelers coach Bill Cowher and former Buccaneers and Raiders coach Jon Gruden. All three have won Super Bowls.
Asked about the report, a team source said, "There's absolutely no truth" to the report.

Jim Costello,
Considering that arguably the best kicker (Jim Bakken) in the 60's averaged 63% on FG's over his career, I don't think 51% is that bad...
Glad I stumbled across your site! Interesting discussion but don't you think slightly narrow minded? Maybe it just seems that way to me. Let me read the post again.
Is it the time to buy land now? Prices went significanly low, but I dont want to be stuck in an non growing market!
I savoured reading it. I need to read more on this subject...I am admiring the time and effort you put in your blog, because it is apparently one great place where I can find lot of usable info..
You not going to believe this but I have wasted all day digging for some information about this. Thanks for this, it was a essential read and has helped me out to no end. Cheers,1200 calorie diabetic diet
I agree with the fan who suggested stop going to the games. The Bears were a woeful bunch in the early 70's, with the Old Man still in charge. Last home game of the season (around 73 or 74), the stadium was half-filled for a game against the PACKERS! Within a short time, Jim Finks was hired to run the show, and Chicago sports history was made. Stop showing up! They'll get the message again.
"There's absolutely no truth" to the report.
why the hell not!!!
bill cowher head coach
mike shannahan O.C.
A lifelong Bear fan. ( Can you say Roger Leclerc )The absolutely worst field goal kicker in The NFL ever ! We called him Roger Lecluck. Halas kept him around because he was cheap.
Roger Leclerc made 75 of 146 field goal attempts in seven years with the Bears. What a lousy percentage.Do you realize how many games LeCluck lost for us ?
We expect stupid from the Bear hierarchy . Its in the genes.
Cowher, Shanahan, Gruden these guys cost money ! Forget it !
Denver pawning off Cutler on Chicago because of Diabetes is just ludacris. Yeah... thats why he only threw for a paltry 4,050 yards last year... get laid.
Whomever said bring in Shanahan because he had a great system in Denver for Running and Passing, and Blocking... Do you realize that he won't be bringing Denver's O-Line with him?
I'm sorry, but Peyton Manning couldn't succeed with this offensive line!
Angelo mortgaged the future of this team by giving up a lot to get Cutler (which, I don't care what anyone says, was the right move), but he did NOTHING to protect his investment! (No O-line, no receivers...) He bought a car and threw square wheels on it.
Furthermore, at halftime, Lovie Smith told Pam Oliver that the turnovers were killing the Bears in the first half.
Noooo... giving up over 300 yards of offense to your opponent is what killed you.
Gaining only 2 yards in the second half sealed the nail in the coffin.
Does nobody else see how inept this front office really is?
The Bears have a healthy bottom line... Sell out every game, high priced merchandise, cheap lease on Soldier Field... Why do anything else? Give everyone extensions because you're raking in dollars hand over fist - and the McFamily won't pay people to NOT be there (so Angelo and Smith getting fired before their contracts are up are highly unlikely).
It's been driven down so bad, rebuilding will even be difficult with no draft picks this coming April.
The front office really did a number on the team - but they're making money...which is what they want...
And we're all suckers for funneling money into the team.
"I'm sick of Angelo & Lovie and his whole coaching staff...they have to go"
Hey lets be fair here. The entire staff does not need to go...Dave Taub and his special teams staff are the real deal!
it's Lovie Smith's idea to pick up all these worthless draft picks...Angelo sucks as GM ...he only does what Lovie tells him to do...If u keep Lovie again as a headcoach, we'll have the same problems with the draft picks as we do now's...Time to clean house & get a much more experience headcoach that knows what he is doing...I'm all for Bill Cowher..he fits the Bears perfectly...The Steelers under him were in the playoffs every year...plus they were in two Superbowls in which one he won...He's an aggressive coach & he'll get his team motivated...I'm sick of Angelo & Lovie and his whole coaching staff...they have to go...I can't stand watching another Bear's Football with this Headcoach & his coaching staff...The only one I would keep is the special teams coach...the others have to go!!!
I heard several NFL sources also say that Angelo and Lovie Smith will be replaced, regardless of Bears official line. It's about time those two under performing and mediocre NFL leaders were given the heave-ho. The combination of Ron Turner's ineptitude and Lovie Smith's mediocrity have taken the Bears offense production to a new low. Jerry Angelo has depleted a much proud Bears franchise of enough quality players on both sides of the ball and left the Bears with remnants and over the hill has beens, while other teams flourish.
The Chicago Bears teams has fell needs fire and hire person on staff. One the person I they will hire Tony Dungy. He made great Indiana Colts Team . They playing he still their coach. He just retire.
Forget Lovie; he's only a symptom of the Bear disease. Dump Angelo!
Please, please! Don't fire Lovie and Jerry. They are perfect for us Packer fans. You MUST keep Lovie until his contract expires in two years. By then the Bears will be in sole possession of last place in the division and the rebuild will take five years, giving us a better chance.
Lets get this straight ! John Gruden took over a team from Tony Dungy and managed "NOT" to screw it up to badly. From that season, all he did was "DUMP" the players that were the "BACKBONE" of the team and things kept falling apart from then on. If you want Gruden to help the Bears, send him to the Vikings.
Everyone knows the Bears are cheap. Smith is fairly well paid for his job, but considering he will be leaving with the team in shambles pretty much details just how much he did to earn it.
They said Halas threw nickles around like they were manhole covers. And, with the exception of Jones back in the old days, sucked pretty bad at hiring coaches. Abe Gibron comes to mind. I used to love to watch Frank Leahy, the former Notre Dame coach, tear Halas and the Bears apart on his weekly commentary show back in the 60's. He used to say Halas was so cheap he wouldn't work for himself, and railed him about the large and worthless Frank Cornish (old #73) as a prime example of just how Halas would go to be cheap when he charged his players for their training camp food, then docked them for being overweight.
Leahy was probably the most intense, and brillant coach to ever come along. Even Bill Walsh said that Leahy was ground zero for the modern era coaches, going to Paul Brown and himself. But, Halas was not a fan of Leahy because for Halas great was subjective, meaning the price for great was too high to pay. Leahy, like Walsh, say great in terms of who could reach greatness. Regardless of how much. Lombardi The Great had that same problem as GM in Green Bay, and left there with the team a big wreck because of his cheapness.
Today the Bears face a crossroads. Hire a real (and expensive) coach, a real (and not cheap) GM and then start bringing is players and free agents who can win. A real coach will find a way to mesh them together.
And maybe, the Bears will win again. They don't need another rockhead Ditka type.
Yeah, sure there's no truth to the swirling rumors. Hey, if the President can go for months without announcing a decision on a troop increase - then float a trial balloon this week with his surrogates leaking firm numbers prior to his big announcement next Tuesday, can't the (formerly) Monsters of the Midway do the same thing? I say Lovie and Jerry are "histoire."
To the guy that suggested Chan Gailey, Forget it. He was terrible with the Cowboys and terrible with KC. If he comes cheap, you get what you pay for. Look at the mess were in now because our coaches come cheap!

Interesting... So if true how can they combat that? Is it a night vision thing, or a fatigue thing?
Yeah, it took Cowher 15 years to finally win one, but the Steelers were in the playoffs almost every single year and were always legitimate contenders. At least they had a chance every single year under Cowher. That is alot more than I can say for the Bears over the past 20 years.

QUOTE: "For all the "fire and passion" Cowher has, he only managed to win 1 superbowl in 15 some odd years in Pittsburgh."
I'd be content with that, better one every 15 years than one EVER!!!!!
They better be looking for a head coach! Right now you have three of the best coaches out there right now (four if you count Dungy, which I doubt he would go to a team that fires his buddy) It does not get better than this.. Although it would be SOOO BEAR for them to wait a year and get a college coach or something (Probably Weis.. OOPS just vomited in my mouth a bit when I typed that)
If their mouths are moving that means they are lying. So if the Bears came out and said there is "no truth" to the rumors, then it sounds like we will have a new coach/GM by Jan 10th. I hope it is Shanny or Gruden. For all the "fire and passion" Cowher has, he only managed to win 1 superbowl in 15 some odd years in Pittsburgh.
Just remember this, if they DO bring in a coach, they will need about a year to bring in their own personnel and their type of players.. they have Cutler for about 4 more years.. small window of time... considering they need to also fix the O line, which could take about 1-2 years as well.. I think the Bears are at the point of no return so to speak, if they are going to fire Lovie they need to now, not in a year...
Well I'll say this. I was watching Chicago Tribune live last night and heard about Bill Cowher saying only two teams intrigue him for coaching, one is Buffalo and the other is Chicago... The telling thing is that Buffalo IS publically looking whereas Chicago, by all accounts, is not; BUT I would be inclined to think by his statement that he thinks the Bears are looking, which means maybe, just MAYBE someone (maybe Phillips) called him asking.. Because Angelo wouldn't have a clue, as more than likely the next coach will have GM authority...
Cowher would be ok, he is a tough guy kind of coach, but tempered, as evident with Pittsburgh... I think Cowher would be the better fit with a good QB coach helping out (sorry the guy they have now stinks) I duuno If Shanahan has it anymore...
After turning 82 and watchuing the Bears as far back as Wrigley Field and saw SAyers go down on the rain slick grass , I know one thing. The Bears aas a company were always cheap. Evewn all pros on that 85 team Atkins etc, said Halas would squeese every one he was so tight, UNTIL that changes no Bears team will play hard the full season
You folks can pick apart all those things wrong, blah. blah blah, but it bpils down to WHAT team comes up on top has players who get paid!
I turned my Bears jersey over to a plastic bag and it;s in our attic.
S.Demlinger
who cares if Lovie or any coach is emotional on the sideline. Tony Dungy, Mike Tomlin, and Bill Walsh were "quiet" coaches and they won Super Bowls. for all of Iron Mike's ranting and raving he only won 1 superbowl, with a tremendous talented team.
what the Bears should do is get an outstanding offensive line.by draft, free agents, whatever, however. with a good offensive line automaticaly your running game improves, which in turn improves your passing game (think play action)Cutler will have that extra second and a half to get rid of the ball, which will help the recivers. a better offense will score more points and just as important stay on the field longer, get you better field position when you do punt, which all in turn helps the defense
Turner should be the first to get fired, specially after he has consistantly ran the same running play up the middle for 1 - 2 yards on 2nd and 3rd and long?? WTF IS THAT?!?!?!?! Ray Charles could see that this team needs a coaching change now! I want a coach who gets into the game, who shows emotion on the sidelines, and who practices tackling! Arm tackles haven't worked and still continue to not work. What happened to that defense also?? Babich shouldn't even be allowed to be on the Bears coaching staff anymore after last years dismal display of incompetence. And whoever had the idea of signing Orlando Pace should be shot on site. This is a team with a few good players who are surrounded by supposed pro's who play at a high school level. Cutler, Forte, Hester, Tillman, and Briggs all deserve better then to play on this team. If this were still a Bears team with the ability to score and beat opponents on defense then it would be a different situation, but its not. This team sucks and change is needed ASAP and it should start with Turner getting fired, then Angelo and Smith, then Ms McCaskey should just croke already and pass the team on to Ted Phillips. My worries would be over if that happened.
One rumor has it that all Chicago Sports Writers are being investigated for faking their pre-school diploma. If that is true, their grade school diploma, high school diploma and any college diploma will be invalidated. All of them will be sent to jail to retake pre-school and all subsequent schooling. If they don't flunk out, they should be out in 15 years. Meanwhile, their news organization will be subject to lawsuits from any season ticket holders who claimed that they bought tickets because a news organization said that the Cubs and the Bears would win. It is feared that such claims would bankrupt all Chicago media outlets and the public would have to turn to high school newspapers for the news. What a relief!
The Bears will NOT win a super bowl until they bring the Honey Bears back. And the problem lies much higher than GM, i.e. owners. I still sense Mike McCaskeys'influence. That still does not excuse Lovies' losing his team. They don't want to play for him anymore, they are just going through the motions.
What do you expect the Bears to do, own up to it? What purpose would that serve except give them more headaches to put up with in the form of additional media coverage regarding GM and head coaching replacements.
the vikings are going to win the Super Bowl if old man favre stays healthy and this will or at least should be a red flag to the bears that they need to make some serious changes.

Bring back Abe Gibron and Wendee, the used car sales girl!
...suffering through 45 years of Chicago sports management.
Go, Blackhawks!!!!
I hope that the Bears will do it - my brain is telling me NO!!!
Bring Bill Cowher....
If it's up to me, I keep Drake (WRs), Toub (Special Teams), Marinelli, and Babich. But, Babich is LBs ONLY, and Marinelli could either stay at D-line coach, or maybe become Def Coordinator if we hired an offensive-minded coach.
But Hiestand's O-line has stunk. Under Pep Hamilton, every QB we've had has regressed during the season (Orton last year, Rex in 2006, and now Cutler), so he's gone. Tim Spencer goes, because Forte's fundamentals are awful. When guys come here talented, and get worse in their 2nd and 3rd years, it's largely on the position coaches.
I keep Babich at LBs because that unit excelled under him in 2004-2006, and is flourishing again, even with the horrible injuries they've had at the position. I keep Toub because he's pretty solid with Special Teams. I keep Marinelli because his D-line work in Tampa got the most out of Warren Sapp and Simeon Rice - we just need to find him more talent to work with. And I keep Drake because he's hard-nosed, doesn't put up with crap, and the receivers have been better than anyone thought they would be. However, Hester must go back to full time returns, and only occasional sightings on offense. When he's distracted by offense his returns suffer, and no one's afraid to kick to him anymore.
But change needs to happen. Turner must go. My vacuum cleaner could design a better offense.
Let's look at the real picture. Lovie needs to go. If they eat his 11 mill. they are not going to hire a coach for 6 to 7 mill per. Thats why they should hire RON RIVERA, he will be inexpensive and birng back that old bear defense, not that cover 2 crap.
once again
sign JEREMY BATES as OFF. QUALITY CONTROL AND QB COACH!
Anybody thought about Chan Gailey to replace Ron Turner? IMO, this is the *perfect* OC replacement for the Bears. His offense last year with the KC Chiefs was remarkably proficient, especially in the second half, given the complete and utter *lack* of talent on that team. I haven't really seen anybody say anything bad about the guy. He was fired from KC earlier this year for not conforming to the new HC's style. The biggest reason for hiring this guy? He'll be relatively inexpensive compared to most of the other offensive coaches out there, especially Martz and Shanny. I can only imagine what he might do with an offense that actually has talent at the skill positions (Cutler is still a Probowler, Forte can't possibly be this bad after last year, and the WRs are speedy if nothing else).
FIRE RON TURNER!
HIRE CHAN GAILEY!
I totally, I repeat totally agree with:

bring back marty ball with his crazy "gadget plays"
he's made the worst teams into playoff contenders every single time he's coached.
Cowher and Shannahan still are my top choices.
also the bears should sign Jeremy bates as offensive quality control and QB coach.

Who out of this bunch should be kept? Pep Hamilton? What a wonderful job he has done..with Cutler? Or Mad Dog Turner? A real offensive genuis. Or Marinelli? We all know how feared that defensive front is under his leadership. And lets not forget Darryl Drake, he made Devin Hester such a weapon this season. Or our fantastic head coach Smitty...what a dynamo..a real pillar of salt.
And last but not least the man that that made all of this happen Jerry the clown.
Speak out Bears Fans and let team management know all of these clowns need to go.

It's true, I heard Hub break the story on The Score yesterday. Of course the organization would say it's not true, but change is coming after the Bears finish 6-10.
PLEASE say the rumors are true, please!!!

Keep dreaming. Ownership hasn't changed. There is NO way they are going to go big like a Cowher, Shanahan, et al.
Like many, I had my hopes up this year. 9-7 last year. Now a real QB...maybe 10-6 or 11-5 this year but playoffs for sure. OL looks worse this year not better. Lovie said Rod Marinelli was best pickup of the off season???? DL is NOT playing much better than last year. Sometimes, yes. But disappear all too often.
Last years team didn't win 11 games because of horrible coaching, not the QB. It helps to watch the games."
Actually ccsu2265, I watch every game and have for at least the last 5 years and I am a lifelong Bears fan. Your comment only agreed with my point. This team SHOULD be better than it's record.
Bears say 'no truth' to report that team is 4-6.
Well they best get on the ball if they're thinking of reuniting Shannahan with Cutler. I hear Buffalo wants him, and he has interest in them.
All i know is, this organization is a complete mess right now, and the immediate future isn't very bright either. And what's the old saying? You can't fire 53 players so that leaves what?
Vince Lombardi could not make this team respectable.
Four easy steps to having a winning bear’s team
first send all your bears jerseys and hats to the owners with a
nice note saying you are now wearing a Vikings, Packers or Lions
jersey and will buy a new bears jersey when they start winning again.
second pitch in with a few friends and rent a billboard, paint two
words on it. ‘fire lovie”.
third get 15-20 thousand fans to go down to the next home game
burn their tickets and go home.
fourth don’t hire a coach that needs a guaranteed contract. Winners
are confident in their ability, losers seek out a guaranty.
OMG, they're looking at people with previous head coaching experience. The last time they did that was in the 50's when George Halas came back to coach. Smith is useless and Turner is a joke. It would be nice to get someone in here with passion and can help Cutler.
"Bears say 'no truth' to report of surveying for new coach, GM".
Here's the equivalent headline from The Onion: "God says 'no truth' to report of whatever Bears team says".
Our beloved Chicago Bears needs to CLEAN HOUSE and replace EVERYONE "INCLUDING" angelo.
List of possible coaching candidates:
Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan, Tony Dungy, and Mike Singletary
While the previous people are great candidates to bring back the feared team, monsters of the midway, back onto the field, I dont think that many want to work for owners that are complete idiots! However, one can always hope and pray for miracles.
GET COMATOSE smith away from the Chicago Bears sidelines!!! He's completely clueless!!!
Who do they think we are, idiots? The Chicago Bears are going to fire a coach with $11 million left on his contract and pay Shanahan upwards of $6 million per year on top of that? And they are going to fire a GM that is under contract till 2013? Child please.
If Senior management isn't surveying they are pathetic at best. Why stick with a group of individuals who are average at best. Unless they are cash strapped? And my impression was the Bears are not lacking money.
This organization is starving for a head coach with charisma and leadership. One who can think out of the box.
A person who attracts quality position coaches. This would be Bill Cowher or Mike Shanahan.
All of the others are contenders not champions.
Bill Cowher??? Raise your hand if you want to wait 15 years before Bill Cowher brings home 1 SuperBowl trophy? Why don't we just keep Lovie around until his 15th Season? I'm sure after 15 Seasons Lovie could get back to the SuperBowl and maybe win it.
hire Cowher it will instantly make defence better....we would have and efffective Blitzburg east defence...
get a reliable reciever other than Olson that Cutler can throw too.
pick up some O-line help.
If lovie waited all the way until last game to get these guys inspired to play defense it shows how bad that he has lost the team
Where there is smoke...there is fire. The upper echelon of the Bears is definitely inquiring. There's a lot more at stake than just LOVIE DOVIE'S 11 Mil.
Do not hire Gruden. Hire Shannahan, Cowher, or Holmgren maybe even Jeff Fisher if he's available, but please no Gruden.
Dare to dream fellow bear fans. Lovie, Turner, and Angelo are JV playing in a Varsity League.
listen bear fans,no bill cowher! the next head coach will be the defensive coordinator of the cleveland browns.

Last years team didn't win 11 games because of horrible coaching, not the QB. It helps to watch the games.
Given the way the team currently treats the media and fans, with lies about Tommie Harris' health, obfuscation about player discipline issues, and a general disdain for anyone seeking legitimate information about what the team is doing, what intelligent human being would believe the team's denial of this report????
I'm not saying that Hub's source is right, but let's say this - Hub has not shown a proclivity for peeing on our leg and telling us it's raining. That's the Modus Operandi for he Bears organization. Arkush is paid to provide information, and thus he probably wants to preserve his credibility whenever possible. By contrast, this organization has no credibility when it comes to player & coach personnel matters.
Just sayin'.....
Do not hire Gruden! All of his players at Tampa despised and distrusted him. Word gets around...no free agents would join the Bears if he is the coach.
Hub is always reliable? Spent the entire offseason two years ago insisting QB job was Rex's. It went to Orton. PFW picks have been a joke for three decades because they're so consistently wrong. Wanna make money? Just go the other way!
Angelo is a C+ GM. Lovie is a C+ head coach. The grades go up a little after a good season. They're currently down a little. These guys aren't awful, but they're not very good either.
I think there will be changes if the Bears finish lousy. Not if they finish fairly well. 8-8, they stay. 7-9, gone.
I'm a huge Jeff Fisher fan. Bud Adams reportedly wanted him gone after the 0-6 start. Fisher could be in play if Tennessee returns to struggling.
Ron Turner needs to go. He can't coach or take advantage of his offensive strengths.
How foretelling is this passage from the NFL draft bible, which ranked turner 22nd?
"22. Ron Turner, Chicago Bears: Ron Turner has been patrolling the Bears' sidelines for quite some time, but if he doesn't make some improvements in 2009, he could be looking for a job in 2010. Turner has always enjoyed pounding the ball and allowing the passing game to thrive off of the run. However, until this season, he has not had the quarterback to accomplish this. Jay Cutler's arrival in Chicago is a gift for the Offensive Coordinator, so Turner needs to seize the opportunity to improve a Bears' offense that ranked near the bottom of the league in 2008."
Get them both "out of Dodge" along with Turner. Let's get a deal going for Shannahan or Cower before it is too late. Don't worry about eating Lovie's contract - he will take a job somewhere.
I would like to see Jerry Angelo replaced. He has not been able to produce with their high round draft picks. I don't want to assess all of the blame to Lovie, but I believe a coach such as Shanahan or Cowher would be an upgrade.
I take delight in all of the comments of my fellow Bear fans. Let's be realistic. If any decision regarding the administrative and on field personnel is going to be made, it will be made by the McCaskey's.
I only hope that after careful consideration they make the right move and commitment to once again make Chicago proud of their Bears
While I do think its time for Lovie to go... please remember he did take Chicago to the Super Bowl in his time hear. Better then any other coach not named Dikta or Halas! Angelo needs to go, just does not have what it takes to be a GM! Also, if they are going to make the change this is the year. Several top flight coaches are available and for the good of the organization and the few quality players the Bears do have a move needs to be made. Be as aggressive as they were last off season when they went after Cutler. By the way, Culter and the WRs are not the issue... play calling and no time to throw the ball are. Also the D is just not that good either. Time for a change... please count the votes of your fans and make a change.
Lovie needs to go but Ron Turner needs to go sooner. How about this week? He is the most incompetent coach in the NFL. He was a dismal failure as head coach at Illinois and the guy is calling the same plays he did in Champaign. Everyone knows his record there. Time to clean house Bear owners. You owe it to this city.
There’s are a few possible scenarios at play here:
- This Story was leaked to qualm the outrage of the fans!
- This story was leaked and contracted to make either Jerry or Lovie to resign.
Nevertheless, Something has to give; there are some better-qualified and proven replacements out there!
How about adding Ted Phillips name to these rumors!
Asked about the report, a team source said, "There's absolutely no truth" to the report.
Well, since there's absolutely no truth to the Bears organization's ability to draft, develop, etc., players, or staff a front office, I would not discount this rumor just yet.
Bring in Ron Rivera.
I believe a change WILL happen and money is not a problem. WHy? A new coach and GM will generate interest and interest equals revenue. A new coach - for the first year - ala next years generates enough revenue for the team to cover the cost of the salaries.
Da Coach would be better than what is sitting in either of those chairs right now. Time to clean house, PLEASE!
Gruden.
Played the team he built in the super Bowl and beat it. Last year coached a salary cap handi-capped team to a decent record. Look at `em now. Young, tireless, kind of crazy.
But he won't come to Chicago.

i hear you just steve. i agree that a good coach is a good coach, but i dont want to just reach the superbowl, i want to win it. heck, lovie got us there, i want to do more than that. i hear you on gruden, but i said after winning a superbowl at their previous team. he never won it with the raiders. im just saying that to hire a guy because he won a superbowl elsewhere doesnt ever turn into the same for the new team. however, i agree with you, and would LOVE to have holmgren as a gm.
I only want Cowher if they bring the guys who were drafting for the Steelees as well. The front office in Pitt is as much, if not more responsible for their success as anyone. Martz? He sucks, give anyone the talent the Rams had and they would look good. Schottenheimer and Gruden are not going to come here as OCs. What did Shannahan do without Elway? Nothing. Gruden won with a team ready to win the SB and never got back. I'm no fan of Lovie, and while he needs to go, Angelo has done a terrible job on his personnel decisions, especially in the draft. Oleo and Bauzain (sp?) anyone? Just for starters. If I had to take a retread coach, give me Holmgren. He's used to developing qbs, has been to the sb with two different teams, and in all honesty, Cutlers playing style reminds me of Favre. I'm not sure of what assistant coaches I would pursue, but they need to get a gm who knows how to draft. Look at teams like the Steelers and Ravens. They're good every year because they know how to draft. Heck, throw the Eagles and Giants in there too.
Yeah, the owners are just so cheap. The Bears are consistently in the top 10 in payroll each year and their coach is the 4th highest paid in the NFL. I wonder who is paying all of those salaries since the owners are so cheap.
BTW, the Patriots, Colts, Packers, and Ravens are all in the bottom 5 in team payroll. You nimrods....
Ok let me tell u all something before they even fire any coaches . they should f*ckin should fix the offense of line. I am actually don't blame any coaches cause they aint the one playing in the filed the players are. and our offense of line stinks big time. why in the hell would u bring in orlando pace he aint even worth it. Cutler needs some time just like other qb to find an open WR so he can throw it to him. he doesn't even get 2 seonds. and btw i hate lovie smith and i think he should get fired cause u won't ever see him angry or screaming at players when they make a bad play. turner and angleo should get fired too but i know that old cheap ass owner wont do that.
I think Jon Gruden would be a goood choice.
i was listening to Les on the Score just now, and nearly everyone is picking Lovie Smith as their "turkey of the year." now, i don't like Lovie either. i thought it was a terrible hire, and they gave him a terribly conceived contract. but turkey of the year? come on Beers fan, the fact remains this: last year you had no players. the team was bad. that's the fault of your GM. your GM pulled a no-brainer and brought in the available QB. but that's all he did. he did not bring in anyone JC could rely on to go get a ball. the team stinks because of Jerry Angelo, not because of Lovie the Liar.
Thinker -- While he didn't win the Super Bowl, Mike Holmgren went from the Green Bay Packers, who won the Super Bowl to a Super Bowl appearance with the Seahawks.
Jon Gruden had really good teams with Oakland and then went to Tampa Bay and won there.
Heck, a lot of head coaches were head coaches elsewhere first (like Bill Belichick for instance). Good football coaches tend to be good football coaches. Even some marginal head coaches become good football coaches when their system meets the right talent (see Tom Coughlin). Mike Shanahan would be the better choice in my book. While I appreciate Bill Cowher, I'm not sold that he would build a team built on offense, certainly not a passing offense. But either one of them could take on the role of head coach/general manager just fine.
Question to the panel. The year the bears went to the Super Bowl. Who was the defensive coordinator. Ron Rivera. Coach Smith has always wanted his brand of stiffs and coaches that he could control. Rivera knew Bears football on the defensive side. He had the chance to get Leslie Frazier and passed on that one as well. Problem, they are not playing to Jay Cutler's strength's. Look at the tapes, all of Cutlers throws are off his bacck foot, because he is bracing himself for impact. He cant step into his throws because the o-line is shattered, even anchor Olin Kreutz is a shell of himself. The Tampa -2 is a dinosaur and its time to move to something else. Lovie you wanted to control the defense, well that is fine, but who is controlling the offense?
I am so tired of seeing Lovie stare off into space whether it is a good play or a bad one! Does he even know what the score is? He is totally lifeless and boring! I want someone who gets involved and tells these mopes how much they stink! Throw something at them when they screw up! For all the money they make no one seems to care because Soldier Field is sold out thats why! Munsters of the Midway! The joke is on the fans!
why do we want all these re-tread, has-been coaches? they will not duplicate their success in chicago. name one coach who won a superbowl with his new team, after winning one with his previous team? not just getting there, but winning it. we need a young up and comer, like mike tomlin, or rob ryan. no re-treads. they will win in the regular season, but wont win a chmpionship here.
Bears fan in Socal says the bottom line is Angelo and Lovie both must go and they can can take Ron Turner with them. His predictable play calling is ridiculis as well as hhaving our recievers run 2yrd outs is killing and demoralizing our whole team.We alsalso hav got to get Jay a true WR cuz Devine ain't it.
Comparing Wrigley Field to Soldier Field is ridiculous . 90 % minimal at Soldier field are strong Bears fans . They're not there for the beer alone . At $250 minimal for a ticket ? Don't lump us Bears fans with Wrigley Field .
Look don't need to fire Lovie Smith. Just fire Offensive Coordinator Ron Turner. He is the problem of the Bears.
Jim Fassel, Marty Schottenheimer, Russ Grimm, Mike Martz, and John Gruden are EXCELLENT offensive coordinators.
Maybe the Bears are looking for guys to replace offensive coordinator Ron Turner. I pray to God that the Bears organization fire Ron Turner.
Hey Bears We Need A Coach like Paul Newman an Pregame warm-up like this.http://www.youtube.com/watc...
get mike shanahan now!!!!!!!
p.s. bill cowher is okay, too
Cutler as head coach? That is ridiculous! Everyone knows Orton would be a far superior head coach... just look at his W/L record as QB.
Thanks blandest22 for adding the nuance that the dunderheads just weren't getting. And by the way, I'm NOT lobbying for Gruden either. That's another baseless assumpton.
How about Cutler as head coach?
He's everything to many of you guys, so just give him everything?
Great news. If it speeds Lovie out of Chicago. GO VIKINGS!!!
There is another rumor going around about Matt Forte really getting injured before training camp and getting hurt quite a bit worse than they let on. He supposedly had some new kind of electro-stim that speeds up the muscle recovery by retraining it at "high speed". I actually know someone who had the same treatment from the same doctor for a knee issue.
For the brainiacs who stated that Gruden can"t terminate he new ESPN contract...
There are always clauses in these types of employment contracts that will allow the "talent" to terminate the contract in the event of a coaching opportunity that arises.
Speaking of brainiacs, don't you think that Gruden knows there are coaching opportunities out there for him at the end of the season? Don't you think he knows he could have a coaching job with a number of teams if he wanted? Knowing this, he still signed the deal. You know crap about his contract, just like me.
"You don't think Gruden could get out of his ESPN contract?"
"Gruden's deal with ESPN has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not he coaches. All it means is he won't be on TV for anyone else."
Are you guys serious? He just signed a friggin extension, why would he do that if he wanted to coach? By signing the extension, he made it clear that he does not plan to coach in the immediate future. Is there any indication otherwise? No. Geez..... the guy is not going to coach anywhere next year.
Furthermore, none of us has read his contract so we don't know what it would take for him to be released, or if there is anyway he could be released.
they need to get rid of both of those clowns-the loss of BU didn't cause the problem---the GM and Coach did!!!
I heard that we are going to get Chinese guy to coach the Bears his name is Win Onesoon!
What about Russ Grimm? He isn't the big name, but he also won't bring a high price tag. He is qualified to be an NFL head coach. He knows the most important part of an offense is the line and will work to build that up.
For the brainiacs who stated that Gruden can"t terminate he new ESPN contract...

Yeah, who would want Gruden, Cowher or Shanahan -- 3 Super Bowl winners -- when you can have Rivera or Mongo? I'm just laughing my arse off after reading something so stupid! When are you idiots going to get over the fact that someone who once played on the Bears isn't going to be a better coach or harder worker JUST BECAUSE THEY PLAYED ON THE FREAKING BEARS?!?!? That's as stupid and senseless an idea as the thought that "Bear Weather" gives the team an advantage over visiting opponents. Enough already.
Again, I still don't understand you people clammoring for Gruden? Have you followed Tampa the past few seasons? He destroyed that franchise. Gruden is nothing more that a dumba$$$ fratboy that won a Superbowl because he had a team that someone else built for him.
Dave, get a clue. Gruden's contract with ESPN means absolutely nothing. He may not coach next year, but if the right situation and $ came along he would drop ESPN like a bad habit.
LOL! And you know him real well, do you?
Why Cowher, Shanahan or Gruden? There are guys out there that would kill for the job who have coaching experience & bleed Bears blue. Riviera's out there - anybody know what he's got left on his contract? McMichael's out there doing well in Arena Football. I'm just not a fan of the "big three" being mentioned & they're gonna cost big $ - something the ownership isn't likely to fork out.
we need to do away with the common denominator in all these years and that is the offensive coach in the booth. He must go as well as smith
This is the greatest news story I have read all year!!!!!! Fire Lovie and the entire coaching staff. Lovie is a complete joke. The guy did not say a word the entire game against the Eagles.....not one tactical adjustment, not one word of advice to the players, not one word of motivation. Lovie knows one "Dinosaur Age" system of football and nothing more..... same goes for Turner..... and same goes for Marinelli (guy goes 0-16 and Lovie hires him) R U F'n kidding me!
Get Gruden or Cowher and watch the Bears do a 180 turn.
Gruden or Cowher will bring in an aggressive hard-nosed coaching strategy and fire up the players into playing BEAR football. No player gets a free-pass or is left unaccountable with Gruden or Cowher.
"I know you are just joking, but 90% of the people that comment on these boards are truly idiots. I mean, in this article alone there are people calling for Gruden, who just signed an extension with ESPN"
Gruden's deal with ESPN has no bearing whatsoever on whether or not he coaches. All it means is he won't be on TV for anyone else.
Truly idiots, indeed.
blandest22
You don't think Gruden could get out of his ESPN contract?
There's a simple solution to fix what ails the Bears.
Wake up Bear fans, stop going to the games! Hit the cheap bastards where it'll hurt them the most.
"What if the entire Bears organization moves out of Chicago and changes their name??? !!!! Then, we can get a brand new Chicago Bears team :) This is the only way that we can guarantee that all traces of bad element are truly gone."
After first reading this, I just moved on to the next comment thinking how ridiculous this was. After further thought, this is actually a great idea. The Bears could forfeit their team to allow LA to get their team and make Goodell promise Chicago an expansion team immediately after. We would probably be SB contenders again before current management gets them there.
I say we fire Lovie & them now so we can get a head start on getting Cowher or 1 of those coaches.
"I would love to see some of you guys get a chance to run the Bares..."
Wow, what a horrible, horrible, proposition! If we want amusement, let them run the Lions.
I know you are just joking, but 90% of the people that comment on these boards are truly idiots. I mean, in this article alone there are people calling for Gruden, who just signed an extension with ESPN; Others are calling for Ditka, geez... One of my favorite comments is how cheap ownership is, although the Bears consistently rank in the top 10 in NFL payroll!
If Virginia dumps Angelo and Lovie and eats their remaining contracts,Bear fans will be paying higher prices for everything, including tickets, until she recoups her losses on these two.
This is not news, every organization needs to have a 3-5 year plan. But very surprised Bears have one.
Hahaha!
Every coach and GM that I play for loses his job. Sure bring in Shanny for me and he'll pay the price -- he let me and my giant ego (small pe*is) run wild -- I was truly a gun slinger under Mike.
Do not bring in Cowher...too boring and disciplined for me!
Someone suggested Ditka!
That would be GREAT to have that Sarah Palin-backing meathead back at the helm.
He'd be the perfect stupid coach for America's dumbest football fans.
I would love to see some of you guys get a chance to run the Bares...
Like Sweet 34-a as head coach...
How about TruckerRod as GM?
Then we could sit back and take potshots all day at those two goofs while the Bares go 0-16.
Tell me that wouldn't be a SNL skit come true?
No offensive line,3rd rate receivers, no pass rush. Doesn't matter who coaches if you don't have the players. Angelo's 1&2 picks haven't produced. Lovie took this team to the super bowl with an average team. Dump Angelo and get some players.
Ditka
Shanahan is from Chicago. His Dad and family live here. He wants to be GM and Coach. He's the one guy who could replace both for about the same $$$$. I predicted this, and it will come true.
Jimmy Mac is NOT 60 - he's 50! Singletary at GM and Mongo at Head Coach!!
I only want Shanahan.
1)Cowher is a glorified cheerleader
2) Gruden destroyed Tampa on the way out.
Right, I'd love it if it happened but are we really to believe that the ol' McCaskey's are gonna eat that much salary?
I've got my money on us having new offensive and defensive coordinators next year and a new head coach/GM a year or two after that.
What if the entire Bears organization moves out of Chicago and changes their name??? !!!! Then, we can get a brand new Chicago Bears team :) This is the only way that we can guarantee that all traces of bad element are truly gone.
Bill Cowher would be ideal, someone who will actually light a fire under these sad excuses of spoiled football players. Why not Ditka? Oh, Virginia, please do us all a favor and sell the team, including your spoiled children.
My guess is that this is a little PR damage control to pacify Bear fans.
I don't see them eating Lovies salary. Look for Charlie Weis to be named Offensive Coordinator so we can better "scheme" other teams. That will unfortunately "buy" Lovie a year or two.
Too bad coaches don't take demotions within the organization.
Lovie will probably end up a defensive coodinator somewhere else.
Gotta hire Shanahan, that guy had a system - Good Running Game, Great QB and Good Receivers. Especially since he got the best out of Cutler.
GM???? Not sure who is out there.
Whatever happens, Turner HAS to go and another OC needs to be brought in, at the very least.
Don't forget the group that run the Bears is the same ones who paid over $300,000 to hire a search firm that ended up bagging Angelo. That's right folks, the Halas-Phillips braintrust paid big bucks to find that inept, so-called GM. Do you really think that they would have the brains to bring in a Cowher or Shanahan? Doubt it. We'd probably get someone on the cheap and hear the usual rah-rahs. Another sad sports year in Chitown.....
This is to good to be true. Ideally Turner, Angelo and Lovie would all be terminated, in that order. Oh and any and all friends of Lovie which might end up in cleaning house. I would love to see this.
Well, if word of this gets out, this could get really ugly, if nothing changes. If they bring lovie back next year, and angelo, then bears fans are going to go into a funk not seen since the abe gibron days.
I don't care who they get, but they need to get someone who can evaluate talent, not angelo, and someone who can coach a team, not lovie. How these guys were able to convince that accountant Phillips that they knew what they were supposed to be doing as gm and head coach is impossible to understand. phillips should probably be replaced too if he blows this transition.
Experience, proven winner, team builder got it? Holmgren might not be bad, he did ok getting favre to play ball. Shanahan and Cowher would both be huge upgrades. I don't think gruden is the guy for the bears. Somehow seeing Cowher scowling on the sidelines would be reassuring. Like we got our team back you know?
Hire Rivera as Coach and fire Angelo as GM ....Angelo & Lovie Dovie suck
get Ditka back at coach and get McMahon back at quarterback...he can't be any worse than Cutler even if he is 60
The most critical move is to fire Angelo because the Bears biggest problem is a lack of talent driven by one bad draft after another. People may not like Lovie, but he has few cards to play - not sure who could win with this roster. However, I agree with those who say this will never happen. Too expensive to fire the guys they have and the new guys everyone is talking about would be too expensive for ownership even if they didn't have to pay out the existing regime. Most depressing is that the desirable coaches probably wouldn't want to come because the Bears have mediocre talent, no high picks next year and a cheap owner. The future is bleak.
PLEASE hire Mike Shanahan!
This is exactly what the Bears and Cutler need to turn it around starting next season.
Mike is an outstanding coach and another successful fellow alumni of East Leyden High in Franklin Park.
Lovie, Turner, and Angelo MUST go at the end of this season for the good of the franchise.
This is most likely false information as they are trying to use DAMAGE CONTROL anyway possible after such heartbreaking losses given a whole city's worth of fans.
We want Mike and Jay back in Denver. Will the Bears take our owner?
Smoke screen. They will not pull the trigger on this.
Buffalo Central.....who would WANT to come here? Really.
I too hope this is true. I would keep Rod as the def line coach and bring back Ron Rivera as def coordinator. I would also get rid of whoever it is that feels you have to pass every down while in the red zone. I am certainly tired of the current coaching staff riding on the coat tails of the Bears last Super Bowl appearance.
Any chance someone with football knowledge can marry into the McCheapsky family and weasle the football team away, just like Michael McCheapsky did?
Remember, Cowher left at the top of his game.
The others were in decline.
Cowher is the best by a huge amount.
The Bears could forge a 10 year dynasty with him, but; alas, we will never spend the money.
If I see Lovie with absolutely no emotion on the sideline, or Turner calling Forte up the middle again, I will throw myself under a bus.
Please, not Gruden. He won with Dungy's team. Shanahan is ideal. Bears need an offensive minded coach after suferring through Wannstedt, Jauron, and Lovie. Enough of the "playing not to lose" type coaches. Hope this report is true. Angelo must go too. A 2nd rounder for Gaines Adams? The Bucs must have been laughing their heads off at them.
Mike Ditka said that George Halas threw nickels around like they were manhole covers. There's still plenty of Halas blood in that boardroom and they all want a piece of the profit. Why would you spend more $ on the team when you don't have to. The reason they gave Cutler that extension is because they were too far under the cap and had to spend it. Can you remember the last time a game was blacked out due to poor attendance? Soldier Field is Winter Wrigley Field. Pour the beer and the seats will be filled.
I hope to see Lovie talk one time on the sideline before his tenure his over. He was smart to ride the his Super Bowl 'appearance' this far.
Please don't tease me man.
This is too serious a subject.
I hope this report is true. Hub is usually pretty reliable, I guess.
Getting rid of Lovie, Angelo, and ALL of their coaches and hiring one of the 3 Super Bowl WINNING coaches would be the biggest breath of fresh air since Ditka was hired.
Hope we can believe in.
Don't know about anybody else, but if they make that change, I'm signed up for continuing to spend time and money on the Bears for several years to come.
Lovie will never get us to the promised land. That is clear.
I have to admit that the prospect of 2 more years of this has me thinking about bailing out on the Bears (after being a fan for 40 years)
All I can say about even the prospect of Mike Shanahan coming to coach the Bears is "YEAHHHH, Baby!"
Then I realize the Bears will probably botch this, too.
well bear fans, time for a change !! hey we got a quarterback with the right parts,we'd be alright !
we need 6ft 3plus wideouts for jay to throw to !
let's make that change !!!
please...all of you meatheads...don't forget...Hub HATES the Bears franchise for firing Jauron and, ultimately, him. if these are closed-door meetings, he's not behind the door.
while changes would be nice, and are becoming necessary, do NOT buy what Hub is selling. he's a wanna-be POS with an agenda....
Dave, get a clue. Gruden's contract with ESPN means absolutely nothing. He may not coach next year, but if the right situation and $ came along he would drop ESPN like a bad habit.
Cowher or Shanahan would be great for me.
fire teddy phillip and gerald angelos
WE WELCOME YOU MIKE SHANAHAN, WITH OPEN ARMS!
How accurate is Hub with regards to breaking a story?
One thing about the bears organization is that there are NEVER any leaks.
Not one local paper ever breaks a story.
So for Hub to get this info, I think he'd be getting his info from people connected to the coaches.
You have to Fire the GM first and foremost...to many draft debacles
Then Lovie, and the regime
You gave to Hire a coach with the abilty to hire who he wants...Lovie was made to take Turner and his pathtic run schemes.
Not saying Lovie is innocent, he has made bad calls as well.
Bill Cowher would be number 1, then Shanny
Gonna cost the Bears mega bucks...so will never happen..look for them to fire Pat Fitzgeralds special teams coach for 500k per year LOL
Arrg! I meant "re-signed."
This story is full of it, at least with respect to Gruden. Gruden is NOT a possibility since he just re-singed with ESPN for another few years.
Angelo is the WORST GM in football!! Who gets a pro bowl QB and then refuses to bring in any WR?? The Bear's WR are a joke and the worst in football. The Vikings have at least 3 that are better and most teams I've seen have at least two that are better than anyone on the Bears.
He also failed to address the OL properly .. he waited YEAS too long to do anything and now we're D-O-N-E.
Finally, he's spend way too much on the Defense which is average at best.
Fire Angelo NOW!!!!!!!!!!!
Do it now and give the new hire a chance to get a head start on learning the personnel. No reason to wait because this season is over except for preparing for the next one.
Actually, Hub did not specifically name anyone - Terry and Dan named coaches and Hub said "he could be a possibility" to each name, or something to that affect. The first name they asked was Mike Holmgren, and Hub did say that he had not heard that name mentioned yet.
I hope this is true and not rumors. Whole Bears coaching staff needs a complete house cleaning, Lovie and Ron Turner need to go.
bring back abe gibron
gary huff and company
theremust be somrthing wrong with
management to go through that many yrs
with such pathetic offenseive ineptitude
Please hire Mike Shanahan.
