NEW YORK -- Joe Girardi is sticking to his guns. He confirmed on Tuesday afternoon that he'll go with Andy Pettitte, on three days' rest, to face Pedro Martinez in Game 6 Wednesday night.
Pettitte, who this post-season is 3-0 with a 3.24 ERA, will follow CC Sabathia and A.J. Burnett in starting on three days rest -- historically a risky proposition in the era of a three-tiered playoff system.
Pettitte was used by Joe Torre on three days' rest in Game 2 of the 2003 World Series. He worked 5 2-3 innings, allowing one unearned run, and was the winning pitcher over Florida's Mark Redman, who was also on three days' rest.
The Yankees lead the series three games to two. But the teams could not have played much more evenly in these playoffs.
The Yankees are 10-4, averaging 5.2 runs per game. The Phillies are 9-5, averaging 5.6 runs. The Yankees have ouscored the Phillies 25-24 in the World Series.
