NU's Coble weighing whether to have surgery

Kevin Coble has two options for remedying his left foot injury, and neither one is good news for the 2009-10 Northwestern Wildcats. But both might aid the 2010-11 team.

Option A is rest and rehabilitation, which would require 4-6 weeks before Coble could resume basketball activities.

Option B is surgery, which would sideline him for four months, effectively ending his season.

The star forward said before NU's season-opening game Friday night that he will see a second foot specialist Monday and then make an informed decision with the help of NU coach Bill Carmody.

Even if he decides not to have surgery, Coble might opt to take a redshirt year rather than join the Wildcats for the season's final 6-8 weeks.

"It's not like you can just drop me in (to the lineup) and things are going to be great," he said. "These guys will develop their own chemistry and we have to look at where we are: Is our record (such) that it warrants me coming back to make that final push or will it be better off just to write this (year) off and come back strong?"

Coble said he would also consider the fact that the Wildcats, on paper, would be loaded next season. And the Big Ten is expected to be weaker.
