Notre Dame's Charlie Weis won't resign, but would have 'tough time arguing' with firing

Five years ago, Charlie Weis flat-out said a 6-5 record wasn't good enough for Notre Dame.

Notre Dame is 6-5 right now, after another eviscerating home loss Saturday. And Weis wasn't backing off his initial comments. And he wouldn't be surprised if that standard cost him his job.

"I still agree with that," Weis said Sunday. "If they decide to make a change, I'd have to say I'd have a tough time arguing with them. Because 6-5 isn't good enough. Especially when we've lost five games by touchdown or less and several three-point games right down to the wire. My intent is to be here. But if that were the rationale, it'd be tough for me to argue with that point."

As for a resignation, though? "That's not happening," Weis said.

Otherwise, Weis spent Sunday deflecting questions about his future and focusing on preparation for the season finale at Stanford.

And he added that he hadn't seen athletic director Jack Swarbrick since the two were in the locker room after that 33-30, double-overtime loss to Connecticut. So, yes, it appears that the Weis Watch will continue for at least another week.

"The most important thing for Coach Weis and the coaching staff is to make sure we do all we can to give players the best plan to be in position to beat Stanford," Weis said. "That might sound like coach-speak, but it's also reality.

"There's plenty of time for me to answer (questions about the future) in detail at later date. The most important thing for us is to do what we do on a weekly basis."

college degree certificates on January 18, 2010 3:00 PM

I am taking a college degree in accounting. I am completely uninterested. I am consideing a college degree in geology. Is the switch easy?

first of all the AD should have marched right into the UCONN locker room and offered the job to Randy Edsell

Secondly, the only way for ND to regain any college football relevance would be to join the Big East and compete for the title each year

Gary, you are soooo right! Notre Dame cares more about its moribund football program than their Catholic identity. Father Jenkins is a complete jackass and I'm sure he has a front seat each year for the university's showing of the Vagina Monologues.

Also you worthless fans who question Weis' decency because he's willing to honor his contract while you are trying to cheat him out of his just dues. Have you no Shame?

ND is in a precarious situation as may be Michigan. Michigan's AD will not fire RichRod as that AD is leaving September 4 - not going to saddle a new AD with a new hire. Watch the NCAA presidential position being hired/filled within the next several months. Myles Brand died... Who was a close 2nd for that position? Who was most instrumental in bringing the NCAA to Indianapolis? Who was from Indianapolis before most recently moving to South Bend. Who wants to be an AD who saddles a new AD with a newly hired football coach? Who may now find themselves between a rock and a hard place?

Notre Dame is consistently refusing to fire the President of the University despite calls from most Bishops and Catholics throughout the country. They would look a little silly for firing a winning (barely) coach, while refusing to fire a president who refuses to make Notre Dame a truly Catholic university. Priorities

Charlie Weis can only resign if he has any decency. Refusing to resign is surely indecent.

Charlie needs to go ..ND can afford to buy him out and let's just keep it plan and simple 6-5 aint going to cut it!

Bye Bye !!!!!! Charlie

To hell with fat ass Charlie and Notre Dames racist ass!! I hope they never win another game.

"Especially when we've lost five games by touchdown or less and several three-point games right down to the wire. "

Yeah, and of the six wins, all of which were against teams now unranked, four were by a touchdown or less, including one in overtime.

If any coach in America is said to be worse than Charlie Weis, that person should sue for slander.

What makes Ty your man! Do you own him? Are you sleeping with him? Or what? Explain for us please.

I agree with you that not everything is an open book. The good priests at Notre Dame and throughout the Catholic Church like to keep as much behind closed doors as possible. It has cost them way too much money in litigation settlements to have everything see the light of day.

The Willingham racism issue has nothing to do with his record at Washington, the racism has to do with how Notre Dame treated him, and treated other equally poor white coaches.

Wake up and smell the coffee.

Whillingham racism give me a break on November 22, 2009 6:19 PM

Give it a rest - Whillingham has already proven he was terrible - he has already been let go from Washington - were they racist or did it have to do with the fact that he could not win - Don't you think anyone on the inside of the program could see where it was headed - not everything is an open book.

18 millon dollars thats why he won`t resign would you

Dear Ryan, your statement that "No one thinks Notre Dame is racist except for a few blacks" is a caricature of the racism that pervades Notre Dame (are you adequately educated to know the meaning of caricature or did you graduate from Notre Dame?).

To set the record straight, I am a 50 something white professional with a graduate degree, raised as a Catholic, educated in both Catholic grammar and high schools. I believe that Notre Dame is racist and that its handling of the Willingham and Weis regimes has been infused with racism.

It is very obvious the "Tax Man Cometh" is a product of the city of Atlanta schools. He writes like he talks! Players should be EXTERMINATED, don't you mean eliminated? And as far as coaching BethuNe-Cookman or Hampton, no he couldn't, they wouldn't hire a non-black coach! Besides, Indiana is UP from you!

- No one thinks Notre Dame is racist except for a few blacks
- Violent crime is down fifty perent in every major American city

I find it fascinating that Notre Dame apologists so quickly dismiss race as an issue in the Willingham and Weis comparison. The split in the country is not 99.9999% perceiving Willingham as an absolutely awful coach. In fact, I would guess that the majority of the country who care would judge Willingham as a decent man who was not given a fair chance, almost entirely because he was black. Gerry Faust was a decent man who had proven himself not up to the task of being a major college coach and he was allowed to serve 5 years. Bob Davie was allowed to serve 5 years. Very few people see Charlie Weis as anything other than an arrogant, obnoxious slob and yet he has been allowed to serve at least 5 years.

Notre Dame apologists would be well served to ask themselves, why do so many rational, middle of the road American sports fans believe that Notre Dame is a racist institution.

The real truth in today's life is that college football -- win or lose -- really isn't very important compared to a record 31 million Americans being out of work (U.S. Dept. of Labor Statistics); Violent crime being at astronomical highs in parts of Chicago, Detroit, Oakland, East St. Louis and Los Angeles; A federal government running essentially a bankrupt organization with no plan for rectifying it; and an out-of-touch Senate voting for a welfare program fully built on money borrowed from China. At this point, if Charles Weis is a decent human being, that looks awfully good compared to the other ills in this country today.

American Internet Awards on November 22, 2009 4:32 PM

Congratulations to "Mr. Thomas Anthony "The Taxman Cometh" Jones, SR".

You have won the "Most idiotic post of the year" Award

"The use of the most words to say absolutely nothing in a post" Award

And, the annual "pulling out the race card to defend Ty "0-12" Willingham" Award.

We though that we were going to have to retire that last award, seeing that 99.9999% of the country realizes what an absolutely awful coach Ty was. But you were there to keep it alive.

Keep up the, um, good work?

dr. kevin white is the person who hired and gave the extension to charlie weis. he left ND in may 2008 for the athletic directors job at Duke.

The reason Charlie Weis will not resign today is the same reason he should have never been hired at ND. He is a pompous, arrogant, ahole.

They are gonna get stomped by Stanford.

Love or hate ND, they do not deserve a jerk like Weis.

Why they ever extended his contract in the first place is beyond comprehension to me.

They practically burned Willingham at the stake for less!

Mr. Thomas Anthony "The Taxman Cometh" Jones, SR on November 22, 2009 2:14 PM

Charlie Weis should be fired today. My man Mr. Tyrone Willingham was fired for having a similar record. Weis came in and won for two years with Mr. Willingham's players. Now the replacement for Mr. Willingham is losing with his recruits. Serves him right! Mr. Willingham was on the right tracks until ther racists backstabbed him unfairly. Weis can't coach and he should run out of South Bend, Indiana now! And Notre Dame needs to stop this Academic nonsense. They need to bring in Athleteswho know how to run and jump. If you can't run you should exterminated. I like Mr. Golden Tate because he is gamer. Notre Dame needs to recruits with the USCs, the Texases, and the Floridas. Yes I have briefcases ready to help. Players are not stupid. Pat Tillman is dead. Reggie Bush is playing in the NFL. Notre Dame wants first class athletes to come to South Bend in the dead of the winter and give my children nothing. Nonsense. Ross Browner's younger brother went to the University of Southern California where the weather is better and the school understansds that future NFL players are future NFL players!
Notre Dame needs to comes into the 21st Century. The best players run like the wind. The best players are hungry. the best players do not ever wanted to dissed by a coach who is disgrace to the United States of America!!!! When this man stole Mr. Willingham's postion he showed us he is no class act. Do you think that he could coach at Booker Taliaferro Washington High School? Or at George Washington Carver High School or at Martin Luth King, Jr. Senior High School or at Fredrick Douglas High School or Robert McNair High School or at Bethume-Cookman College or at Hampton University! Weis must go. Fire him now and give ovwer to the Al Quada Freedom Fighters for remsom. Get some real fast players down at South Bend, Indiana. And we were lucky to beat Michigan State and Washington. And Mr. Pete Carroll understands the Athlwetes. Let the players do what they want to do. Live Free of Die, Weis!!!
We need Mr. Charles Strong, the defensive coach at the University of Florida, in Gainesville, Florida. And give him a guarenteed twenty year contract and an unlimited recruting budget. I volunteer to carry the briefcases. That will give Mr,. Strong plausible deniabiltiy. Fire Weis! Hire Mr. Charles Strong. And that bum up in new England should be fired for giving us that bunch lies in his refernce letter to Notre Dame. If the coach of the New England Patriots said Weis was good you knew it was a big fat lie.

Sure, if they fire him, they still owe him on his 10 year contract, while if he resigns, he gets nothing. Would you volunteer to resign under those conditions?
