PALO ALTO, Calif. -- This just in: Apparently, all DVD players were stolen from the campuses of Notre Dame and Stanford this week. Or, at minimum, both teams' defensive staffs were struck blind.
Because neither side seems able to figure out how to stop the best weapons of the other side, which explains the shootout that has ensued, leaving Notre Dame with a 31-27 lead at the end of three quarters at Stanford Stadium.
The third quarter began with Notre Dame's Michael Floyd catching a 46-yard touchdown on a reverse flea flicker out of the Wildcat formation on the Irish's first possession. Stanford duly followed by gashing its way to a Toby Gerhart 10-yard touchdown run.
Hence the current score, though Stanford moved to the Notre Dame 11-yard line, where it faced a fourth-and-7 on the first play of the final quarter.
