White Sox general manager Ken Williams said today that newly acquired Mark Teahen will play third base, with Gordon Beckham moving to second base.
The Sox today completed the proposed trade sending Chris Getz and Josh Fields to Kansas City for Teahen and an undisclosed amount of cash.
"[Beckham] is all for it and ready to go," Williams said of the plans to shift the young infielder over from third base, where he played last season.
Beckham said he was fine with the position switch, but knows it will be a challenge.
"I'll probably have to work as hard, if not harder, than I did at third base,'' Beckham said..
Williams also said today that based on recent negotiations, "it's not likely" that leadoff hitter Scott Podsednik will re-sign "based on what he wants."
"We'll keep getting after it and in other areas."
Earlier today, the White Sox declined to pick up right fielder Jermaine Dye's $12 million option for 2010 and will give him a $950,000 buyout.
Williams said he unsuccessfully tried to make moves that could create a spot for Dye. Williams didn't rule out a return by Dye, but said there is one outfield spot left that could go to a speedy player or a left-handed power hitter -- neither that fit Dye's profile.
Williams also tempered talk of a big free agent signing. "Money is tight all over the world, especially on the South Side."
The Teahen trade was delayed because the money exchanged by the two clubs had to be approved by the commissioner's office, a common occurrence when $1 million or more is involved.
The Tribune's Rick Morrissey says Beckham should play short.

I stopped reading the rest of your comment after "THEN SAY PODS WANTS TOO MUCH MONEY?"
Podsednik is NOT worth what he's asking for, I can guarantee that. Liability in the outfield, poor baserunning... all he can really do well is hit, and who knows if he could perform as well as he did offensively in 2010 as he did in 2009, or can even stay healthy. Did you forget his last good season was 2005?
I know you'll be upset that you can't bring "SCOTTY 2 HOTTIE" signs to White Sox games anymore if he's not resigned, but get over it.
Kenny never seems to know what he wants. Go young vs go for it all. Speed vs Power. Since the 2006 ended, it's always been a mix of both. I would like to see Pods and Dye back and am not that excited about Teahen. I am excited about prospects CJ Retherford and Jordan Danks however more than anyone. I was incredibly disappointed in Alexi's defense at shortstop last year and pleasantly surprised by his defense at second in 2008. Why not allow Gordon to play his natural position? He might not have the range or arm Lexi has, but I think he would be more solid and consistent, like Orlando Cabrera, only he won't be calling the official scorer every inning to debate errors.
Beckham is better than average offense @ 2B, which makes room for a heavier hitter in the order. Teahan unfortunately is a below average bat for 3B, but not awful. If Jermaine Dye goes, they now have to replace 25 HR and 80 RBI's in right. Assuming Quentin can replace those numbers in Right (performing close to his 2008 #'s), you still only have Konerko and Quentin that can produce 100 RBI's in this lineup. If Teahan is your 3rd most productive run producer, 2010 will be a LONG season. Trading Dye's money for Rios could be Kenny's undoing ultimately. That kind of money needs to buy you a 30/100 man every year.
thanks for 2005 jermaine and scotty.
I can easily see Beckham taking over at second. He will be an all star in the next two years playng second everyday.
Teahan at third is better than him in the OF. Hopefully they will bring back Pods to play LF. Dye, while I love what he has done in Chicago, was the odd man out.
Rick Morrisey is an idiot. I deliberatley do not read his articles most of the time just because I know all he is going to do is try and spark up some sort of controversy out of thin air, and Im going to be pissed that the moron actually influences the thinking of some people out there that cant think for themselves or read between the lines. The guy might be worse than Mariotti.
UNREAL ....KENNY IS JUST UNREAL THROW WAAAAAAAAAAAAADS OF CASH AT POS RIOS AND THEN SAY PODS WANTS TOO MUCH MONEY?
FURTHER, LET DYE GO AND KEEP KONERKO WHO SHOULD GO! FYI, PK HATES PODS AND CLEARLY THAT IS WHAT KENNY IS USING AS HIS MEASURE HERE, LITTLE GIRL GAMES. NICE KENNY, NICE. SO COOL, DON'T RESIGN PODS I PRAY HE SIGNS IN THE AL, SPECIFICALLY IN THE CENTRAL, HEY HOW BOUT THE TWINS SINCE THEY TRADED GOMEZ TODAY. KENNY: U R OUT OF YOUR MIND. TEAHAN DEAL IS GOOD I THINK AT THIS POINT, BUT HATE TO SEE GETZ GO. I AM LIVID AT THE PODS COMMENT AND FRANKLY YET AGAIN CONTINUE TO DESPISE KENNY WILLIAMS. 2005 WAIT TIL 2105 AT THIS RATE.
I'm still a little perplexed by what direction management wants to take this team. We lost a lot of our speed in just Getz and Pods, and I thought that was the way our team wanted to return to...speed and small ball. Now we have no speed, no bullpen, and still no leadoff hitter.
I will miss Dye. PK is the one who should go. He's the slowest.
This is the same path Ryne Sandberg took. A can't-miss shortstop who plays 3B his first year in the bigs because the team didn't want to move the incumbent (bowa for the cubs) even though many felt the rookie would have been the better SS. Then a move to 2B instead of staying at 3B.
Don't remember why Sandberg moved to 2B (Was it Ron Cey?) Then they drafted Dunston, so Sandberg never got to be SS. Would Sandberg have been a better SS than Dunston? Will Beckham ever move to SS? Can't he be a Jeter-like (or even Sandberg-like) leader from 2B, despite what Morrisey says?
