Cubs bid adieu to Yum Yum Donuts building

While awaiting the arrival of Jim Hendry to the general managers meetings here at O'Hare, we pause to remember the passing of the Yum Yum Donuts building next to Wrigley Field.

The venerable, old greasy spoon closed down years ago and was turned into an office for the Cubs media relations department.

But they upgraded to a new trailer a couple years ago, and now that the team has been sold, the Yum Yum building was finally demolished this morning without any fanfare. The land will eventually be used for the Triangle Building that Tom Ricketts said is "the key" to their Wrigley Field modernation plans.

Before Starbucks moved into the neighborhood, Cubs players in the 1970s and '80s would often stop by Yum Yum for a cup of coffee and a very greasy fried egg sandwich on the morning of day games at Wrigley. The Yum Yum building was also the site of a famous press conference in the winter of 2005, when Hendry announced the trade of Sammy Sosa to Baltimore.

Yum Yum, we hardly knew ye.

I used to pick up Yum-Yums for all work functions and really fell in love with the crumb top and the cream filled donuts. They were so generous on the topping/filling that one would serve as a meal. If any of you know the recipe, or know where an equivalent donut can be found, please share this info

My Grandfather, Fred Habib, Sr., was the owner of Yum Yum Donuts from the 70’s until the late 90’s. It’s funny how much a part of my life that place was. Seems so long ago and like yesterday at the same time. Grandpa loved what he did, he loved the Cubs and he loved his customers. He’s since passed but it’s great to see that Yum Yum is still in the memories of some other than my sister, my brother and myself.

I worked at Yum Yum donuts my senior year of high school back in 1986 when Fred owned/ran the place. Oh, the memories - some good, some bad. But they had the best damn donuts in Chicago, that was for SURE!

Here is a photo of what they are talking about that I took:
