wbackman.JPGThe New York Post reports: Former White Sox minor-league manager Wally Backman seemingly is being groomed as a possible replacement for Jerry Manuel, should the Mets get off to a slow start next season and decide to bring in a new manager.

Backman was was hired Monday as manager of the Mets' Brooklyn Cyclones farm team in the New York-Penn League. A member of the Mets' 1986 World Series championship team, Backman was hired to manage the Arizona Diamondbacks in November 2004. He was fired four days later after The New York Times reported he had been arrested twice and had financial problems.

Backman managed the Sox's Class AAA Birmingham Barons in 2002 and '03, leading the team to the Southern League title in his first season. He was considered a candidate for the Sox job after Manuel was fired in 2003, a position that ultimately went to Ozzie Guillen. He was fired as manager of the Joliet Jackhammers of the Northern League in 2008.
