Lovie Smith refuses to discuss any Bears personnel changes

Although Bears general manager Jerry Angelo all but said there would be personnel changes come Sunday, coach Lovie Smith declined to discuss those changes.

``If we were going to make a personnel change, we wouldn't talk about those through the week,'' Smith said. ``Offensive line, every position on our football team can't feel good about what we did (against the Bengals).''

Speculation is that left guard Frank Omiyale will be benched in favor of former starter Josh Beekman. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner said the offensive line lined up as usual Wednesday, but it remains unclear how many first-team reps Omiyale or Beekman received.

``I just went out there and helped the team wherever the coaches told me to go,'' Beekman said.

Asked about his future moving forward, the once-demoted Beekman said, ``The Bears organization said they want me.''

Smith said he is not concerned with hurting anyone's feelings. He is more concerned about playing the players that give the Bears the best chance to win.

Last week at this time, Smith said the offensive line would remain status quo. He did not make the same statement Monday.

``I'm not going to talk about anything personnel-wise,'' Smith said with emphasis. ``To me, that's pretty clear. If that's all you want to talk about, there's nothing else to talk about.''

Pressed about why he wouldn't disclose such changes, Smith snapped back.

``Just don't want to. Simple as that,'' he said. ``Don't want to give the opponent an advantage. We want them to wonder what we're going to do, like you are right now.''

Defensively, the Bears are likely to use a lot less of safety Kevin Payne and a lot more of Nathan Vasher in the nickel defense. Vasher saw reps at both corner and safety Wednesday. He also has experience at nickel back, but Vasher doesn't think he'll take any reps from nickel back Danieal Manning.

It will be interesting to see who starts at nose tackle with Tommie Harris expected to return Sunday. Marcus Harrison started for Harris last Sunday but could start next to him against the Browns in front of Anthony Adams.

Can wait until the Bears hire Mike Shanahan... then you'll really have mess on your hands. Mike can't with out superstars..... rotflmfao...

lovie you dreaming wake u you and your coaching staff are a train wreck i think i hear the 90s calling you and your cover 2 defense. lovie you and your gang are a bunch of bums get out of chicago and dont come back we dont like losers in our city

Funny he spoke of them after the Green Bay loss ... now it is a national secret so one of the worst teams in the NFL doesn't do what?? This guy should be in the war room with Biden, Clinton and Obama pontificating National Security ...what a joke call the clown out for god sake!

"Smith said he is not concerned with hurting anyone's feelings. He is more concerned about playing the players that give the Bears the best chance to win."

I think this is a load of manure. Lovie has been playing the people he wants to play regardless f the chance to win or not. He continues to play this keep it close game and see if the team stiffens up in the last few minutes for the win. I am seeing almost every former Bears Player have playoff or All-Pro caliber seasons and Benson of all people, should have had a pounding from the defense, if only to prove a point that he shouod have been gotten rid of. The moment Cutler came to the team, the offense can't figure out if it is a Running or Passing offense, and I am sure this is effecting the O-Line trying to adjust to the fluxuations in play calling. I can only hope that since we have Cutler that we will get some secondary defense. If the Bears are playing with 100-110% Then the time for change is here, get rid of the age and take a chance on some new blood. There is a reason we are mediocre. Veterans come to Chicago for to sit and get a big check. While hungry youth is out there performing their butts off. Knox is a prime example. I whole heartly agree, if he was a 1st or 2nd round pick, we would have never seen him on this team.

"For the second time in six games, Cutler was closer to bad than good." - David Haugh

That's about right. Cutler will usually outright lose about 33% of our games. The other 66% he'll play well, giving the Bears a reasonably good chance to win. When we add it all up we'll probably win a little better than half our games, assuming we have a good defense.

McDaniels was smart. He knew he had to trade Cutler to build a consistent playoff winner.

The biggest personnel move needed after last week is Lovie needs to demote himself to defensive quality control assistant.
