Kris Versteeg's goal gave the Blackhawks a 1-0 lead over the Montreal Canadiens after one period Friday night at the United Center.
Versteeg scored when his centering attempt from behind the Montreal goal to teammate Patrick Sharp hit Canadiens defenseman Marc-Andre Bergeron and trickled past goaltender Carey Price.
The first period featured hard hits between the Original Six teams, including the Hawks' Andrew Ladd drilling Matt D'Agostini near the Montreal bench. Ladd, who appeared to leave his feet on the hit, hit D'Agostini with his shoulder and elbow and the Canadiens winger had to be helped to the dressing room.
The check sparked a skirmish and resulted in Ladd drawing a game misconduct penalty, causing the Hawks to play a man short the rest of the contest. Ladd was also assessed a five-minute elbowing penalty and two minutes for roughing. Montreal's Kyle Chipchura was given four minutes for roughing.
The Hawks, behind former Canadien Cristobal Huet in goal, killed off the Montreal power play.
The Hawks out shot Montreal 13-7 in the first.
